New Research Suggests Chocolate Improves Heart Health

Now Everyone Has an Excuse to Eat More Chocolate!

Most of us know that chocolate has been proven to be good for your mood, but lately there have been several studies suggesting it has several physical health benefits as well. We're thrilled to hear this, because it gives us a good excuse to indulge in one of our favorite guilty pleasures. The latest study comes from Denmark, at the Harvard H.T. Chan School of Public Health. Chocolate has already been linked to heart-related benefits such as preventing heart disease and stroke, and now this study suggests the sweet treat also lowers the risk of atrial fibrillation, or an irregular heartbeat.

While scientists don't know why this is, they suspect it may be because chocolate contains flavonoids, which are known to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. If the flavonoids are the reason for the health benefits, then the type of chocolate might make a big difference, because some types have more cocoa than others. We should note, however, that this isn't an excuse to overdo it, as many of these studies found health benefits with eating moderate amounts of chocolate.
