Many of us think of ketchup as a modern culinary trend, developed to add flavor to french fries and other traditionally “fast food” menu items. However, this condiment has a long, rich history, and it wasn't always a staple of fast food cuisine.
In fact, while some people now look down on it, when it was first developed over 1,000 years ago, it was a staple for many types of cuisine. Early ketchup was a far cry from the tangy tomato concoction we find in little plastic packages at fast food joints everywhere!
We never gave ketchup much of a second thought beyond how good it tastes on french fries…tater tots…onion rings…mmm…but we digress!
