#4 Romanesco
No, this is not some form of alien life! This bright chartreuse veggie is actually the complex flower of a type of field cabbage related to broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts.
How does it taste? Romanesco has a flavor that is similar to cauliflower, but can be described as a bit ‘earthier,' with nutty undertones.
How is it prepared? One great thing about romanesco is that it's so easy to prepare. It can be lightly cooked, cooked through, or even served raw. Cooking methods include steaming, sautee, or even as part of a casserole.
Where and when? Romanesco season lasts from late summer to early fall, when you may be able to spot it along with the cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower in the supermarket. Next time you spot it, give it a try instead of broccoli or cauliflower and see what you think of this gorgeous veggie!
Next up: a fruit that looks like it was meant to be part of a Muppet!
