#5 Rambutan
The smooth white fruit of the rambutan is hidden within a strange, hairy red shell. The hairs look like they are possibly dangerous spines, but don't let that scare you away. They are soft and once you know the trick, you can get past the odd shell and find the tasty fruit inside.
How does it taste? Rambutan has a mild, sweet, fruity flavor with a hint of tartness.
How is it prepared? Rambutan fruit is just right for a quick snack, but you'll need to get past the hairy shell first. Cut a slit in the skin of the fruit and then, holding the fruit on a flat surface, separate both sides a bit, then squeeze to extract the fruit. Be careful: there is a seed to remove from the inside of the fruit. No cooking is necessary!
Where and when? Rambutan is grown all over the tropics, in Hawaii, Puerto Rico and Africa, but the plant is native to Indonesia and Southeast Asia. Outside these areas, it's exotic appearance and tendency to spoil quickly at room temperature make it a fairly rare find, but some specialty grocers do carry them. They're well worth a try!
