7 Strange Fruits and Vegetables You’ve (Probably) Never Eaten

#6 Watermelon Gherkin

Also called Mexican sour gherkin, cucamelon, and mouse melon these tiny fruit can be as small as a grape when ripe, despite their amazing resemblance to watermelons. As Modern Farmer (link below) explains, these little guys are even better tasting than they look.

How does it taste? Watermelon gherkins have a mild and lemony taste. As they ripen, the stripes tend to fade and the tartness increases. They have a pleasant, crunchy texture.

How is it prepared? They can be eaten raw, with the skin on, but are also popular as pickles or served sauteed, like a vegetable.

Where and when? Watermelon gherkins are available  from summer to fall. They are native to South America, but can be easily grown over a wide range of climates, as far north as Canada.
