#7 Puhala Tree Seed Pod
The fruit of the hala or puhala tree looks strange and bumpy on the outside, but even odder is the bright inner appearance as you take it apart.
How does it taste? The edible parts of the pod has a sweet taste, as do the leaves.
How is it prepared? The edible parts of the seed pod are inside the dozens of wedge-shaped ‘phalanges' and can be eaten raw or cooked. The rest of the pod as well as the leaves and other parts of the plant have lots of various uses, including a fibrous part of the fruit that is used as a sort of dental floss!
Where and when? The puhala seed pod provides a substantial food source across the Micronesian atolls where it grows natively. The plant ranges from the coastal regions of parts of Australia to Indonesia and throughout parts of the tropical Pacific.
