This May Be A Historical Find, But We Sure Wouldn't Want To Eat It!
Archaeologists find a lot of strange things when excavating historic sites, whether they're exploring a long-forgotten city or unearthing a wrecked ship on the bottom of the ocean floor. Often, the artifacts they find help them understand how ancient civilizations lived and operated, and at times what they uncover even help them solve centuries-old mysteries!
Recently, a team excavating a Swedish warship that sank in the 1600s found something that shed light on the eating habits of its crew. The team was excavating a ship called the Kronan, which sunk in the Baltic Sea in 1676 and was lost until scientists located it in 1980.
There have been several digs conducted there in the intervening years, and a recent one yielded several intriguing finds, including gold coins, jewels, and…a pot of cheese! That's right, a fully intact pot of cheese sitting on the ocean floor for over 300 years!
