That Big Turkey Dinner Might Not Be The Reason Everyone Was Sleepy After Dinner; There’s Another Reason

Turkey's Bad Reputation May Be Unwarranted!

It's practically a cliche that a big holiday meal is invariably followed by a nap. Who among us hasn't gotten incredibly sleepy after indulging in a nice generous helping of juicy, tender, succulent turkey? And that's precisely why people typically blame the turkey for their fatigue. This doesn't usually occur after an ordinary weeknight meal, plus turkey  contains an amino acid called tryptophan, which causes people to become sleepy after consuming it.

However, this amino acid, which creates the neurotransmitte serotonin, is found of plenty of other foods, including the foods we typically eat every day for lunch and dinner. So why don't we get sleepy then? Well, there are a multitude of factors that work together to create that post-meal fatigue, and now that we have a greater understanding of how this happens, we feel a little guilty for giving turkey such a bad rap all these years.
