It Will Be The Best Thing You'll Make All Week… We Promise.
Although we may have some coleslaw at a summer barbecue or serve cabbage soup on the occasional snowy evening, vitamin-packed cabbage rarely gets the attention it deserves.
This cheesy casserole recipe sneaks cabbage into a flavorful combination of beef, tomatoes and gooey cheeses for a satisfying dish that will have even cabbage-haters asking for seconds.
We loved the hearty texture and comforting flavor, but what we really like about this dish is its simplicity. With just a few basic ingredients and a single skillet, you can have a warm, filling and delicious dinner on the table in less than an hour. Can't argue with that!

Sounds like a great casserole, but as a German, I must say I have never seen or eaten this in Germany. I would call this a great recipe, but not a German Classic.

That’s what it sounds like, i have made a similar stoup and have the same process for making stuffed pepper casserole. They are both very good but i agree, not a German Classic. Grand daughter has been to dinners totally dedicated to German cuisine and have not heard of this recipe in their gormet menu.
2 lbs. ground beef
Salt and pepper or creole seasoning
1 onion, chopped
1 cup rice, uncooked
3 large handfuls of roughly chopped cabbage
1 8 oz. can tomato sauce
2 cups of water (I just use the tomato sauce can twice)
1 14 oz. can diced tomatoes, undrained
1 cup shredded cheese (I used Colby Jack)
The Step By Step Directions To Follow:
Season and brown ground beef and onions. Drain off grease.
Once onions are clear, add rice, cabbage, tomato sauce, 2 cups of water and diced tomatoes.
Stir.
Reduce heat to medium low and cover to simmer for about 20 to 30 minutes.
Once cooked, top with cheese and cover with lid to melt a few minutes.
