Here are just a few of the foods on the list. These are some pretty ordinary and common foods in American cuisine, so we were quite surprised to see them on this list.

1. Hazelnut
You say: Hay-zul-nut

You should say: Hay-zul-NOOT

It comes from German, so that’s why.

2. Quinoa

You say: Keen-wah

You should say: Chee-NOH-ay

Everyone gets this one wrong.

3. Fajita

You say: FIY-ee-tah

You should say: Fah-JEET

The “a” is silent at the end.

4. Sushi

You say: SOO-shee

You should say: SHOO-shee

Japanese is one of the toughest languages to pronounce correctly.

Other foods that are commonly mispronounced? Fish and chips, Worcestershire sauce, parfait and linguine. You've probably been saying these words correctly, but it can't hurt to check. After all, a lot of food names come from other languages, and might not translate well when pronounced by English speakers.
