If Scientists Have Their Way, We May Soon Be Eating Meat Grown In A Lab!
For years, scientists have worked diligently to develop lab-grown meat that's both affordable for mass production and tasty enough to satisfy the demanding taste buds of consumers. The first finished product, in 2013, was neither. The world's first lab-grown hamburger cost $330,000 and evidently didn't taste very good. So while the idea was possible, it certainly wasn't very realistic as a substitute for traditional meat.
There are many reasons advocates are pushing for lab-grown or “cultured” meat, partly because of animal rights and welfare and to give vegetarians and vegans more dining options, and partly because many people believe that depending on animals for food just isn't sustainable long-term.
In fact, critics point to both the high cost and the environmental impact as reasons why alternatives should be developed sooner rather than later.
We've been following the process closely over the past few years, and we recently came across an in-depth update and explanation of the benefits and challenges associated with creating lab-grown meat.
