How To Cut Onions Without Tearing Up Or Using A Silly Looking Gadget

We've heard them all – hold a match in your mouth, chew gum, use a different knife. No matter what dumb method we've used, none of them worked!

Until We Tried This…

1 Chill the onion. Placing it in the freezer or a bowl of ice water for at least 30 minutes, or in the refrigerator for a couple of hours, may temporarily quiet the compounds.

2 After cutting the onion in half, rinse both sides under cold running water for 1 minute. This will wash away some of the irritants.

One other method that sounds strange but apparently works: hold a piece of bread in one's mouth while cutting the onion. The theory is that this causes people to inhale less of the fumes since the bread prevents them from breathing through their mouths.
