Here's everything you need for this rich, mouthwatering lasagna. You need three hours and fifteen minutes for this recipe that makes over twelve servings.

Ingredients To Gather:

• 1 pound sweet Italian sausage
• 3/4 pound lean ground beef
• 1/2 cup minced onion
• 2 cloves garlic, crushed
• 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
• 2 (6 ounce) cans tomato paste
• 2 (6.5 ounce) cans canned tomato sauce
• 1/2 cup water
• 2 tablespoons white sugar
• 1 1/2 teaspoons dried basil leaves
• 1/2 teaspoon fennel seeds
• 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
• 1 tablespoon salt
• 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
• 4 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
• 12 lasagna noodles
• 16 ounces ricotta cheese
• 1 egg
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 3/4 pound mozzarella cheese, sliced
• 3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Directions To Follow:

1. Start by cooking the sausage, ground beef, onion, and garlic in a Dutch oven over medium heat until browned. Next, add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce and water, and then stir to combine. Then, add the sugar, basil, fennel seeds, Italian seasoning, 1 tablespoon salt, pepper, and 2 tablespoons parsley. Simmer the entire mixture, covered, for about 1 1/2 hours. Stir occasionally while simmering.
2. Next, boil a large pot of slightly salty water, and then cook the lasagna noodles in it for between 8 and 10 minutes. Drain the noodles and rinse with cold water, and then combine the ricotta cheese with egg, remaining parsley, and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a mixing bowl. Next, preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
3. Now you're ready to assemble the lasagna. To do this, spread 1 1/2 cups of meat sauce in the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish, and then place six of the lasagna noodles lengthwise over the sauce. Spread half of the ricotta cheese mixture on top, followed by a third of the mozzarella slices. Next, spoon 1 1/2 cups of the meat sauce on top, followed by 1/4 cup of Parmesan cheese. Make additional layers by repeating this process, and then use the rest of the mozzarella and Parmesan to top the lasagna. Cover with foil and then bake for 25 minutes. Take the foil off and bake for another 25 minutes, and then allow it to cool for 15 minutes before serving.

We recommend spraying the foil with cooking spray or leaving plenty of room between the foil and the cheese to prevent sticking. We absolutely love this lasagna with a small dinner salad on the side.
