Is It Necessary to Rinse Dishes Before Putting Them in the Dishwasher?

Here are a few reasons why the conventional advice about always pre-rinsing your dishes generally no longer applies. This will be a hard habit to break, but we're happy about anything that will save us time on housework!

1. It makes your dishwasher detergent less effective.
Dishwasher detergent works by attaching to the food particles on your dirty dishes. If there's nothing for the soap to grab onto, it can't do its job. Not only will the wash cycle be less effective, but you're also essentially pouring expensive detergent down the drain.

2. It's confusing to your dishwasher.
Newer dishwashers often have fancy sensors that check to see how much water it needs to use and how long the cycle should be in order to get the dishes clean. If the sensor doesn't have much to detect, it will give a lighter wash, which could result in still-dirty dishes.

To top things off, pre-rinsing your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher just wastes time and water. This is because the EPA estimates that dishwashers use between 4 and 6 gallons of water per load, so there's really no reason to add to that amount by using extra water to pre-rinse dishes when it's just not necessary.

Do you pre-rinse your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher? What do you think of the reasons against pre-washing your dishes? Do you notice

No! Scrape them. I’m not going to wash my dishes before I wash my dishes. That’s stupid!!

No. Most dishwasher manufacturers tell you not to rinse.

I always pre-rinse however, I recently bought some Cascade Platinum that Consumer Reports says is very effective without pre-rinse. I haven’t tried it yet, I still have some other stuff to use up first.

Do a test. This isn’t rocket science. Take two dirty plates. Rinse one plate, don’t rinse the other. Place them into the dishwasher and wash. If they come out the same your don’t have to pre rinse. Can we stop creating articles about this topic now?

It sure does. More expensive dishwashers produce cleaner dishes.
