You can use this recipe to make a single layer nine by thirteen inch cake, a two layer nine inch cake or about two dozen cupcakes. It only takes about twenty minutes to prepare and thirty minutes to bake so you won't have to wait long to wow everyone with this great tasting treat!

Let's Get Started!

The Ingredients To Gather:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/4 cups buttermilk
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons whole milk
  • 1/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon heavy cream
  • 1/3 cup Rich Chocolate Ovaltine powder

The Step By Step Directions To Follow:

  1. To make the cake, place a rack in the center of the oven and preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour a 9×13-inch cake pan or 2 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 to 5 minutes.
  3. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, beating for 1 minute between each addition. Beat in vanilla extract.
  4. Whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Add the buttermilk and beat on low for 1 minute. Increase the speed to medium and beat for 3 minutes more.
  6. Bake for 25 – 30 minutes or until cooked through and the top springs back lightly when touch. Test the cake by inserted a skewer into the center of the cake. Cake is done when just a few crumbs are left on the skewer.
  7. Remove from the oven and allow to cool in the pan completely before frosting. If making a layered round cake, remove the cakes to a wire rack to cool completely. Let cool completely before frosting.
  8. To make the frosting, cream together butter, cocoa powder and salt.
  9. Add powdered sugar. Turn mixer on low and mix in powdered sugar while adding milk and vanilla extract.
  10. In a 2 cup measuring glass, stir together heavy cream and Ovaltine.
Add remaining cream mixture or until you’ve reached your desired consistency. Beat until soft and creamy, about 1 minute.
