It turns out that a whopping 90 percent of the time, the wasabi you’re eating is just horseradish that’s dyed green. The reason? Wasabi, it turns out, is really damn difficult to grow. Not only do wasabi plants take forever to grow (one year and three months), but during that entire time, you need to grow it just right, with the perfect amount of sunlight and the right temperature of spring water.

We never expected that. This discovery makes us want to examine our food a little more closely the next time we visit our favorite restaurant. Who knows what other fake foods we've been unknowingly consuming all these years?
