Follow this coveted sandwich theory from Epicurious when taking your next adventure with a patty melt. If you do, you'll have an epic experience every time. We promise.
THEORY: RYE BREAD IS THE ONLY ACCEPTABLE OPTION
Apparently, the only way to go is rye — and this is non negotiable. Rye offers a sour tangy flavor that you can't get from, say, a sourdough. Don't question the theory. It also has the structural integrity to keep every thing between the slices. This is important because nobody wants to take a bite out of their burger and have every thing fall out from the other side. Plus, rye is pretty much a classic when it comes to the patty melt, so why mess with it?
THEORY: MAYO IS KING
With a patty melt, mayo extends its use beyond a condiment. Incorporate it into your cooking technique repertoire to bust it out during a patty melt building sesh. Slather your RYE bread and then pan sear with mayo side down. The result, a deliciously crunchy vessel for the meat and cheese … Mmmmm.
THEORY: PATTY MELTS SHOULD BE CHUCK FULL OF FLAVOR (PUN INTENDED)
I've said before and I'll say it again, the beef is truly the star of this sandwich. Meaning, you better pick the right beef to achieve sandwich success. Go with ground chuck, it has the perfect amount of fat content to keep your patty moist and flavorful throughout. Can you hear the beef sizzling in its own juices? A mouthwatering caramelization is in full effect.
THEORY: TWO CHEESES ARE BETTER THAN ONE
This section really doesn't need much explanation, because it's absolutely true that more cheese is a good idea. But to elaborate, use swiss AND cheddar cheese. Swiss is classic, and Cheddar adds a sweet, nutty flavor to this burger.
THEORY: CARAMELIZE THOSE ONIONS
Caramelizing your sweet yellow onions is the way to go. We agree that it takes longer than grilling your onions, or using fresh for that matter, but it is totally worth it. These onions take your melt to an ultimate level. Success!
NOTE
So the next time your feeling like eating a patty melt, remember the sandwich theory. These tips not only help you make the perfect melt, but they also help you keep those expectations high for the next time your at a restaurant or your friends house. Never settle.
