Ingredients to Gather
2 pounds fresh broccoli, trimmed and cut up
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus more for greasing the casserole
1/4 cup chopped celery
1/4 pound fresh mushrooms, sliced
1/4 cup chopped onion
1 (8-ounce) can sliced water chestnuts
1 (10 3/4-ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
1/2 pound cheese product, softened
1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 cup grated Cheddar
Directions to Follow
Begin by preheating your oven 350 degrees Fahrenheit and buttering a 9×13″ casserole dish. Next, steam the broccoli until it's tender. This usually takes about 10 minutes. While you're steaming the broccoli, melt butter over medium heat and then add the celery, mushrooms, and onion to the skillet and saute until they're soft. This should take about 10 minutes. Drain the vegetables and then combine them and the broccoli in a bowl. Next, warm the soup and the softened cheese product. Heat in a saucepan over low heat and cook just until the cheese melts. Now you'll combine it with the broccoli and vegetable mixture and add garlic salt and pepper. Finally, put everything in the casserole dish and bake between 20 and 25 minutes. Wait until the last 5 minutes of cooking time to add the grated cheddar, and sprinkle it all along the top of the bake.
