I loved my mother’s method of storing her onions from the garden. She used old , panty hose, legs only. drop an onion into the bottom, tie a knot, repeat. . When you need an onion just cut one off below the knot . They kept all winter in her cellar.

We store Vidalia Onions because we cook with these delicious sweet onions as long as possible during the year. We even freeze them for soups, stews & etc. we like them better than regular onions.

If you grow your own, then you usually have more than you can eat in a short time, therefore you need a good way to store them.

Daddy used Mama’s nylon stockings after she had gotten a “run” in them to store their onions. He’d place an onion in the nylon, tie a knot, place the next onion, tie a knot, etc. Then he hung the nylon up on a nail for storage.

I wrap Vidalias in newspaper and put them in the bottom crisper. They last from Easter when they are available until December.

I always put them in an old nylon stocking, a knot between each onion and hung them in pantry. Then cut off one at a time as needed

Interesting. I usually hang my onions in old mesh onion bags with a tie between the onions. I keep them in the basement and the keep well for quite a while. I have used nylon stockings too.

I read where you discard the leftover onion and don’t save or refrigerate it wrapped or not because it obsorbes the odors and other bacteria in the frig and becomes poisonous.
