As website Delish notes, employees at the store were worried about how the cake might be viewed. With police violence a major and controversial issue, there were concerns that agreeing to decorate such a cake could reflect badly on the store:
“One of the bakers told me the design could be perceived as racist and nobody feels comfortable decorating the cake,” 21-year-old Jordan Harkins, who tried to order the cake, told conservative radio host Todd Starnes, explaining that she then stormed out of the store. “I was so shocked. I didn't know what to do or say or anything. I was trying not to lose my temper or make a scene.”
Wal-Mart later backtracked on its position, with the corporate office saying the decision was a mistake:
“Our goal is to always take care of customers. But, sometimes we misstep. We're glad we were able to connect with the family to apologize and make this right,”
The apology is little comfort for Harkins, however:
“This doesn't make up for the fact that it shouldn't ever have happened in the first place.”
We're not entirely surprised this happened, because police violence and racial concerns are certainly a sensitive and controversial issue, and no one wants to be seen as racist or insensitive. We're sure this won't be the last story like this we hear!
