You May Of Had A Calzone Before But Have You Ever Had It Tex-Mex Style? We Didn’t Think So!

The fire roasted salsa verde and the blend of Mexican shredded cheeses add so much unexpected deliciousness to the traditional Italian calzones that you may find yourself making them South of the Border style from now on.

You can experiment with different ingredients such as adding chopped avocado cilantro fresh red salsa and make it as mild or as spicy as you like. This recipe serves four but you can double it easily.

In forty-five minutes, you'll have a dish your family will think you ordered take-out!

The Ingredients To Gather:

  • 1 pound ground turkey, extra lean
  • 1/2 c onion, chopped fine
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 3/4 t ground cumin
  • 1 1/2 t dark chili powder
  • 1/2 c red bell pepper, chopped fine
  • 3/4 c salsa verde, fire roasted
  • 1 (11 oz) can pizza dough, refrigerated, thin crust (use whole wheat if you can find it)
  • 1 c Mexican blend cheese, shredded
  • 1 egg white, beaten

The Step By Step Directions To Follow:

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Place rack on upper third of the oven.
  2. Over medium-high heat, heat a large skillet. Add ground turkey. Cook 5 minutes, stirring. Make sure to crumble turkey meat. Add onion and garlic. Cook for 4 to 5 minutes or until onions are translucent.
  3. Add spices. Cook for 1 minute. Add chopped pepper. Cook 1 minute.
  4. Remove from heat. Stir in salsa.
  5. Unroll pizza dough. Divide into 4 portions. Place in each dough rectangle 1/2 cup of turkey mixture on half of the dough. Top with 2 tablespoons of cheese.
  6. Brush egg mixture on the border of the dough. Fold dough over turkey mixture. Press with a fork to seal. For a crisp crust, brush additional egg wash over top of the calzone.
  7. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown.
