By now, who hasn't heard of Sriracha? It's a super spicy hot sauce that originated in Asia but has since gained international popularity, being used to flavor everything from potato chips to mac and cheese! It may seem like it's everyone's favorite sauce now, but it was actually introduced in the early 1980s and didn't really catch on until a couple of decades later. Some restaurants swore by it, but it was basically an industry secret that took a while to hit the mainstream.
Once it did, though, wow it was everywhere! However, it wasn't long before things got out of control and this sauce was showing up in nearly any product you could imagine, including ones that had nothing to do with the original manufacturer Huy Fong. In fact, there's been a bit of a backlash against this once-popular condiment, simply because so many people are using it that you never really know what you're getting.
