5 Tricks Supermarkets Use To Get More Money Out Of Our Pockets

Every business has their tips and tricks for getting people to stay longer and buy more. Here are some that you may know and some that may surprise you.

Shopping Cart Size

I cannot tell you how many times I have walked into places with only the intent of buying one or two things but walked out with more than I came for. Apparently, there is a secret to this that the stores know and that is sight plays a large part in your shopping choices. If your cart doesn't look full you feel a sense of the trip not being complete. So we continue to fill it until we are satisfied.  Think about it. The bigger the size of the shopping cart, the more inclined you are to fill it. I mean has anyone ever walked out of Costco or Sam's Club with only one or two items in your shopping cart?

Eye Level Items

This one is especially tricky. Most of the more expensive items you will find will be eye level. Take the cereal aisle for example. Walking down the cereal aisle you will find the store brands are usually bottom shelf items while the name brand sugary expensive items are at eye level. Why is that? It's because most people do not want to spend too much time in the store so if they're in a hurry they grab one of the first things they see. It also plays on the children as they will look eye level and see the sugary marshmallowy cereals and beg parents for them.  Basically, it plays on our weakness.

Essentials Are In The Back

Only need to stop and get the basics. There is a reason they are usually located in the back! The store owners are hoping that by having to walk through the store something else will catch your eye enticing you to purchase more than you came for.  This trick is also used in the checkout lane where they put the impulse items such as gum, candy bars and magazines.

The Music

It has been proven time and time again that the right music can either elevate a mood or make it worse. This information has been applied in many marketing situations including the grocery store. If you will notice most of the music played in the grocery store is geared towards those with the spending power. Normally adult contemporary music that will give you a sense of nostalgia or put you at ease lessening your desire to hurry up and leave.

Organization of Products

Ever walk into your favorite grocery store, the one you've been going to for years only to find that the item you are looking for is now not where it normally is! This can be the most frustrating thing and it seems to happen at least once or twice a year. Well as it turns out there is a very good reason for it…getting you to search is part of the plan. Getting customers to walk around will entice them to spend more time in the store and hopefully seeing other products will make them purchase something other than the one or two items they came with!

So the next time you are in the store looking for your groceries make sure to keep these things in mind and stay on task and on budget!
