No Sour Cream? No Worries! Here Are A Few Easy Substitutes

Here are our favorite ways to substitute sour cream. With these options, there's absolutely no reason to run out to the store in the middle of cooking dinner or abandon a recipe simply because you don't have what you need.

USE CRÈME FRAÎCHE
While it's less common to have crème fraîche in the fridge, if you do, why not make us of it. Since it's the French equivalent to sour cream, it's an easy one to one substitution, though it's slightly less sour.

USE BUTTERMILK
This is too thin to dollop on your baked potato, but you can use buttermilk in place of sour cream when baking or in dressings.

USE KEFIR
Same goes with unflavored, unsweetened kefir—it's runnier than sour cream but a fine substitute in baking, dressings, or even you morning pancakes.

But wait…there's more! (Substitution suggestions, that is.) You can also use whole milk Greek yogurt, which is the easiest method because you just use the same amount you would of sour cream. You can also use plain yogurt, but you'll need to strain it for about an hour to make it thicker. This is pretty easy — just take a colander lined with cheesecloth and place it over a bowl.

Finished!

We don't know about you, but we were really relieved when we found this list of substitutions for sour cream. It's just one of those ingredients that can really make or break a recipe, and it's also one of our favorite indulgences, especially as a topping for mashed potatoes.

Happy Baking!
