5 Surprising Ziplock Cooking Hacks

5 Surprising Ziplock Cooking Hacks

Mix & Portion Out Burgers

Create delicious gourmet hamburgers in a Ziploc® brand bag beforehand, then score the bag for individual portions and freeze for later. Once you’re ready to cook (our delicious red onion burgers) crack along the scored lines to break off what you need. Grill what you want to eat and put the rest back in the freezer

Poach fish in a Ziploc baggie

I know it sounds odd but it can really be done! I stumbled across this while searching Youtube and was stunned. Check out this short video below and you will see that it is legit!

Make a vacuum-sealed storage bag

This one I had to see to believe! luckily I had just been to the store and needed to separate some chicken into smaller packs so I ran and grabbed my Ziplock baggies and sure enough it works.

Freeze leftover wine in them for cooking.

I am not a believer in left over wine but in the odd chance that you do have some left this is a GREAT idea. Simply pour your left over wine into a Ziplock Freezer bag and store in your freezer until you are ready to use it. Here are some good tips when freezing wine:

  • Freeze wine in 1/2 cup portions and thaw only as much as needed when making sauces. Generally, a sauce will need 1/2 cup to one full cup of wine.
  • Make sure to clearly label and date the bags before filling them… it’s really hard to write on a bag full of liquid.
  • To keep the wine from leaking out the zipper top, just fold the bag over with all of the wine in the bottom half. The fold in the bag usually keeps the wine far from the other end where the zipper is. Occasionally you’ll find a bag that leaks but I have had great success with freezing liquids in zipper bags. And again, it is the most air tight way to freeze liquids which will help prevent freezer burn and other flavors from messing things up.

Fill them with smoothie prep and store in the freezer

This is one of my favorites. We live in a very warm climate so smoothies are a must, especially during the summer. This makes it simple for my kids to walk up to the freezer and pick out which flavor they would like and then throw it in the blender without having to make a mess looking for all the ingredients. Trust me this one saves a ton of clean up time. This idea can also be used for meal prep as well.

Decorate cakes and cupcakes like a pro by making a DIY piping bag.

If you like to bake for your family do yourself a favor and stop spending money on piping bags! A sturdy Ziplock bag will do just fine!

Simply take your bag and cut a small hole in the corner and insert the pastry tip in and fill with whatever frosting you choose. Check out the pic below as its super self-explanatory.

So there you have it. Those are my 5 favorite and in my opinion ingenious ways to use baggies in the kitchen. Have you used these before? If so how did it go? Let us know in the comments below.
