Celebrate July 4 With American Flag-Themed Salad

Here's everything you need for this stunning and delicious American flag Caprese salad. This recipe makes four servings.

Ingredients to Gather

18 small purple potatoes (about 1 pound)
Kosher salt
1 pound herbed cheese spread, at room temperature
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1/3 cup fresh basil leaves, roughly chopped
26 cherry tomatoes, halved (about 2 pounds)
24 1-inch mozzarella balls in brine, drained well and halved

Directions to Follow

Cook the potatoes in generously salted boiling water until fork-tender but not falling apart, about 20 minutes. Drain well and allow to cool completely. Cut in half crosswise.

Fill a pastry bag, fitted with a small star tip, with the herbed cheese spread. Cut a piece of parchment large enough to fit a 12- by -17 1/2-inch wooden cutting board. Put a dab of cheese spread on the underside of each corner of the parchment to help it adhere to the cutting board.

Next, pipe a thin layer of cheese and spread it in a rectangle measuring 6 1/2- by -9 1/2-inch in the upper left corner of the parchment. Place the potatoes on top of the cheese in rows, with the cut side facing up. Take the remaining cheese and use it to make the flag's stars by piping it in between the potatoes. After this, take half the oil and drizzle it along the empty part of the parchment, and then sprinkle basil on top. Take the halved tomatoes and place them in a line with the cut side facing up, starting from the top. Now, take the tomato halves and place them in a line with the cut side facing down. Repeat this process with the rest of the tomatoes and mozzarella, and then drizzle the rest of the olive oil over everything, followed a sprinkling of salt on top.

Wow! This salad is certainly one way to add flair to your July 4 celebrations. What do you like to make for Independence Day? Share your thoughts in the comment section below!
