The Knock, Knock Test Is Not Effective…
There's nothing quite as refreshing as a sweet, juicy and ripe watermelon, and it's just the kind of thing you want to indulge on a sweltering summer day. However, flavor that amazing is definitely something to be enjoyed year-round as well!
Not all watermelons are created equal, however, so if you're heading out to the supermarket or farmer's market, be sure you know what to look for when buying one.
It's something of an art form as well as a science, and there are definitely several things you should look for when examining all of the watermelons on display.
You may be tempted to pluck from the pile the first one that catches your eye, but if you don't give each one a thorough examination you may be missing out on some serious flavor!
Fortunately, we have the complete and no-fail guide to picking the perfect watermelon so you'll never have to worry about that again!

Mellon???
Terry Lemons i gotta review this….
Melon ONE l
I always pick the wrong one and I love watermelon.
Instead of the “knock-knock” method, I use my open hands. I tap on it open-handed with one hand and have my other hand on the other side of the watermelon. I listen to the sound, but more importantly, I feel the vibration. Been doing this for years and haven’t been disappointed yet. But, when I try other methods, I end up with a “mealy” melon. I’ll stick with the vibrations! 🙂
I also feel the end-caps, they should be firm. The weight and field patch are key.
I know that the word “melon” has just one L when used in this context. Otherwise it’s a small town in Wisconsin.
You walk up and squeeze them, oops sorry, I was thinking about a different kind of mellons
Yes, I know how to pick a ripe watermellon. The white spot turns yellow and it is ready to eat.
Do you know how to spell?
Look for the underbelly to be Yellow. I read about that and it is true. Got a sweet melon at Costco! Get a melon with dull finish NOT shiny. Get a heavy melon.
Recipe Station needs a spell check…melon only has one L 😛
can’t find the bee stings like Daddy said to look for. I used to see them on melons and get THAT one. They were always sweet.

TURN IT OVER AND LOOK AT THE BELLY. SHOULD BE YELLOW..
Geraldine Schuck Rieman that’s sometimes called corking and it happens when fruits like watermelon or peppers have so much sugar that it seeps and makes a tiny crack that dries.
Deb Terrill Thanks!
No I don’t and I don’t think anyone else does either.
what is a mellon…..please use spellcheck when writing articles
Watermelons with seeds are much sweeter. Often hard to find.
The knock knock trick has never failed me.
Knock-knock and yellow patch has never failed us.

In my experience if the belly is too yellow I find that when I cut it open it is mushy.

Do you know how to perfectly spell “melon”?
Sorry this bothers you Diana Zollner. Just sharing an informative post from another site.
We never have a problem, we get GREAT Watermelons here in Ohio ..always!!!! You just need to come to Ohio this summer and take some one 🙂
I am saving these tips. Thank you.
spelling incorrect
Except they shouldn’t be uniform in color, they should have brownish colored “veins” on the outside. These are signs of them being pollinated by bees and not hot house grown, bees and other pollinators make the melon sweeter
Yes i do
