Chocolate-Cinnamon Babkallah is a Dish Everyone Needs in Their Life!

See what happens when babka and challah decide to get married and have a baby: heaven. The Babkallah is such an amazing creation, so we decided to take it one step further and turn it into French toast. Mind blown!

Things You Will Need:

Dough:

  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 1/4 ounces. envelope active dry yeast
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted, cooled, plus more
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more

Filling and assembly:

  • 6 ounces bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped

  • 1/3 cup (packed) light brown sugar

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

  • All-purpose flour (for surface)

  • 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature

  • 1 large egg yolk

  • Granulated sugar (for sprinkling)

How To Prepare:

  1. For the dough, you'll want to heat some milk in a small saucepan. After you're done with this, you can put the milk in a large bowl and start to whisk in the yeast. You'll let it hang out and sit for about ten minutes, until foamy.
  2. Next, whisk the egg yolks, vanilla, one cup butter, sugar, and salt. Combine until dough forms that you'll knead for about ten minutes.
  3. Once this process is complete, you can transfer the dough to a buttered bowl and cover and let sit for about 2 hours.
  4. For the filling, you'll want to mix chocolate, brown sugar, and cinnamon.
  5. This is where your beautiful dough comes into play: divide your dough ball into three rope portions. Brush each rope dough with butter and cover with the filling mixture.
  6. Braid the ropes and pinch together. Then let them rest for about two hours.
  7. Now it's time to get baking! You'll want to warm your oven to the appropriate temperature of 350 degrees.
  8. Give your beautiful braided dough an egg wash and sprinkle with granulated sugar.
  9. Put this bun (er, dough) into the oven for about 45 minutes, until golden brown. Don't forget to let it cool down on a wire rack before enjoying.

Note: Because we are always looking for the next best breakfast, why not turn this beautiful bread into French Toast?! Slice appropriately, prepare French Toast as usual, serving it with powdered sugar and maple syrup. Yum!
