Is It Necessary to Rinse Dishes Before Putting Them in the Dishwasher?

You'll Be Happy to Know You Don't Have to Spend Time on This Chore!

If you're like us, you grew up being taught that you absolutely, positively must rinse your dirty dishes before you put them in the dishwasher. You were probably told that the dishes wouldn't come as clean if you didn't rinse them first, or that you'd use too much dishwashing detergent or water by making your dishwasher work harder to clean off all that stuck-on grime and food.

Well, it turns out that the conventional wisdom about pre-rinsing your dishes isn't really true anymore. That's because today's dishwashers clean better and work more efficiently than older models, so in most cases your dishes will come clean even without pre-rinsing them. However, you will still need to scrape off any dirty food first!

To learn why you probably don't need to waste time pre-rinsing your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher, please continue to Page (2) for the full story.

No! Scrape them. I’m not going to wash my dishes before I wash my dishes. That’s stupid!!

No. Most dishwasher manufacturers tell you not to rinse.

I always pre-rinse however, I recently bought some Cascade Platinum that Consumer Reports says is very effective without pre-rinse. I haven’t tried it yet, I still have some other stuff to use up first.

Do a test. This isn’t rocket science. Take two dirty plates. Rinse one plate, don’t rinse the other. Place them into the dishwasher and wash. If they come out the same your don’t have to pre rinse. Can we stop creating articles about this topic now?

It sure does. More expensive dishwashers produce cleaner dishes.
