This recipe makes enough for about 1 liter of butter, but if you don't need quite so much you can cut the recipe in half. It takes about thirty minutes to prepare and about four and five hours to cook. It will smell so heavenly, your mouth will be watering long before you even taste it!
Let's Get Started!
The Ingredients To Gather:
2,5 kg (5.5 lbs) slightly tangy apples
250 ml (1 cup) hard cider
1 dl 1 tbsp (½ cup) packed light muscovado {or light brown} sugar
4 cinnamon sticks
1 tsp ground ginger
¼ tsp ground allspice
¼ tsp ground nutmeg
⅛ tsp ground cloves
Put all ingredients into large ovenproof pot. Mix well, cover with lid. Bring liquid at bottom of pot to boil, let simmer for 30 minutes, or until apples are soft and falling apart. Stir occasionally.
The Step By Step Directions To Follow:
Preheat oven to 150°C (300°F). Place oven rack in bottom third of oven.
Remove pot from heat, discard cinnamon sticks. Pour applesauce into blender, blend until lump free. Pour applesauce, discarded cinnamon sticks back into pot.
Place pot in oven. Cook, uncovered, 1 hour. Stir occasionally to prevent any scorching. Discard cinnamon sticks. Continue cooking applesauce, stirring every half an hour, for 3-4 more hours, or until it has desired consistency. Applesauce will slowly thicken and turn into a gorgeous deep red-brown color.
Remove from oven, store in jars. Apple butter will keep in the refrigerator for a couple of weeks.
Note: The recipe can easily be halved. The cooking time in the oven will reduce to 2-3 hours.
Enjoy!

I’ve never had homemade apple butter, but I bet it’s wonderful. I’ve only had the store bought and it’s pretty good.
