Sunken Apple Cake One Of Germany’s Favorite Desserts

Cakes are a delicious way to combine the flavors of each season into one glorious dish. In many cultures, cakes are a common occurrence during mealtime and are enjoyed, at the very least, on a weekly basis. Yet here in the United States it seems that cakes are reserved for “special occasions” which I find sad as cakes are a treat that should be enjoyed all year long. Their versatility alone is enough to warrant a weekly cake creation!

Germany is one such country who understands that cakes are a great thing to incorporate into everyday living and they have created one such cake that is so popular many regions disagree as to who the original creator is or where the cake originated. Yet no matter where it came from we are happy to have found it. It is great for those who are just starting out on their baking journey and a wonderful project to bake with the kids.

In order to create this masterpiece you will need:

For the cake:

3 medium apples
1/2 lemon
1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
9 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon unsalted butter, at room temperature
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 large eggs
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon fine salt
1 to 2 tablespoons demerara (raw) sugar

Outside of the apples, I had everything I needed already at home which is another great aspect of this recipe! So now let's look at what we will need for the whipped topping (yes there is homemade whipped topping) and let's put this cake together!
