2 1/2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
2 1/2 teaspoons granulated sugar

The Step By Step Directions To Follow:
Heat Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add oil , heat for 1 minute. Add garlic, cook, stirring with a wooden spoon, 1 minute to soften. Add ham, sprinkle with half of ground cloves. Cook until edges of ham begin to brown, curl, 4 – 5 minutes. Flip ham over, sprinkle with remaining cloves, brown for 3 – 4 minutes more.
Move ham to side of pot. Add onion, cook until beginning to soften, 3 -4 minutes. Place green beans on top in even layer. Pour in broth; beans and ham will be mostly covered. Add salt, sugar, stir gently to incorporate.
Bring to gentle boil. Reduce heat to medium, cover, simmer 30 minutes, stirring a few times to ensure even cooking.
