This Maryland Crab Imperial Is Our Go-To Appetizer for Parties

Here's everything you need for this hearty Maryland crab imperial. This recipe takes 40 minutes total and makes between four and six servings as an appetizer or snack.

Ingredients to Gather

1 pound (450g) special or lump crabmeat, picked over for shells
1/2 cup (120ml) mayonnaise
2 tablespoons (30ml) Dijon mustard
2 teaspoons (10ml) fresh juice from 1 lemon, plus grated zest of half a lemon
2 tablespoons minced fresh flat-leaf parsley
1 1/2 teaspoons Old Bay seasoning
1 small shallot, finely minced (about 2 tablespoons)
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1/2 cup panko bread crumbs (1 ounce; 30g)
2 tablespoons (30g) unsalted butter, melted
Baguette toasts, saltines, or other crackers, for serving (optional)

Directions to Follow

Start by preheating the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and then combine the crabmeat, mayonnaise, Dijon, lemon juice and zest, parsley, Old Bay, and shallot in a medium-sized bowl, stirring until evenly incorporated and then seasoning with salt and pepper. Next, combine the bread crumbs and the melted butter in a small bowl, stirring until evenly coated and then seasoning with salt. After this, pack the crab mixture into a 1-quart baking or gratin dish, then layer the buttered bread crumbs evenly on top of the crab. Set on top of a rimmed baking sheet and bake for about 20 minutes or until the crab mixture is heated all the way through and bread crumbs are golden.
