We Combined A Big Mac With A Traditional Eastern European Dish & The Results Were Amazing!

By now, the Big Mac is practically an American institution. It's one of the most popular, well-known and beloved burgers there is, and the name is practically synonymous with the word hamburger. After all, who can forget that catchy commercial jingle that promised “All-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese…” We just love when someone creates a new version of one of our favorite foods, which is why we knew we just had to try this inventive take on the traditional Big Mac.

Here's everything for these savory Big Mac pierogies. This recipe takes 1 hr. and 30 minutes and makes between 18 and 20 pierogies.

Ingredients To Gather:

  • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ pound ground beef
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar
  • ¼ cup minced onions
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons relish
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • Sesame seeds
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • Shredded lettuce
  • Thousand Island dressing

Directions To Follow:

In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Add sour cream, butter, and egg. Stir until well combined and the dough pulls away from the bowl. Transfer dough to a lightly floured counter and knead until only slightly tacky. Cover dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
In a large skillet, cook beef for 3 to 5 minutes, until browned. Drain on a paper towel-lined plate.

Next, combine the beef, cheese, onion, egg, relish, salt and pepper in a mixing bowl and mix well. Remove the dough from the refrigerator and roll it out gently onto a floured surface, rolling it until it's 1/8-inch thick. Next, cut out circles in the dough using a 4-inch round cookie cutter, re-rolling scraps a couple of times or as needed. Put 1 tbsp. of filling in the middle of each circle, and then fold the dough over to form a half-moon shape, gently pinching the edges to seal them.

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil, and then reduce it to a simmer and drop half of the pierogies in and cook for between 6  and 7 minutes; they'll float to the top when they're done. Remove the cooked pierogies with a slotted spoon, and then drain on towels before sprinkling with sesame seeds. Now, heat the butter and olive oil in a large skillet until the butter has melted, and then fill the pan with pierogies, being careful not to put so many in that the pan is crowded. Fry them for between 3 and 4 minutes on each side. Serve while still hot, and place on a bed of lettuce and with Thousand Island dressing for dipping.

Finished!

These pierogies are certainly an innovative take on the beloved Big Mac hamburger, and we're excited to discover a new way to enjoy one of our favorite treats. We especially love the Thousand Island dressing on the side.

Happy Baking & Enjoy!
