An Award Winning Chef Taught Me This Method For Cooking Ham

There are so many ways that we can go about doing things but that does not mean that every way is the right way. Sure they can all lead to the same inevitable conclusion but why not take the road that is the fastest route…especially when it comes to cooking!

Ok so here is what she told me to do- BAKE IT IN A BROWN PAPER BAG!!!!

I know it sounds like I'm kidding but I'm not and before you say “You're gonna burn the house down” Please note that the sides top or bottom of the bag NEVER touch the oven.

Start with a bone-in smoked ham. Plan on 1/2lb ham per person which sounds like a lot, but that’s figuring in the weight of the bone plus any fat that will be trimmed away.

Next, cut the handles off a brown paper grocery bag. Then, wait for it….

Put the ham in the bag.

Fold the top of the bag down then place on a cooling rack set atop a 9×13″ baking pan and press the bag down around the ham.

Move the oven racks to the very top and very bottom of the oven then place the ham inside and bake for 18 minutes per pound at 325 degrees. So, for example, you’d bake a 2lb ham for 36 minutes.

*Be sure the bag isn’t touching the racks, back, or oven door.*

There you go- that's it! There is nothing else that needs to be done other than wait and see how amazing this actually turns out to be!

This is also how I do turkeys but one does need to do the seasonings and butter, prior. They come out beautifully; brown and juicy!

The cockroaches and their eggs that sometimes are present in paper grocery sacks, will add flavor to this style of ham cooking 😉

This is how I leaned to bake a good ham (brown sugar & mustard basting). Don’t use brown bag anymore (not long ago, tho). Thanks Bobbie!
