7 Strange Fruits and Vegetables You’ve (Probably) Never Eaten

#1 Zucchini Blossom

Surprise! We begin our list of odd fruits and vegetables with one that probably grows on a farm near you, but you never thought it would be tasty or even edible. The common zucchini is a type of summer squash and grows easily in most regions.

How does it taste? Technically it's a fruit, but cooks treat it like a vegetable, but many people are surprised to learn that the flower of the plant can grow to enormous size and that it tastes wonderful. Some describe the mild flavor of the cooked blossom as similar to popcorn.

How is it prepared? There are several ways to prepare zucchini blossom, but the most common is to fry the delicate flower in batter, leaving a bit of the stem on as a means of handling it. They are also edible raw!

Where and when? Zucchinis blossom in summertime. The blossoms are rather delicate, though, so it can be tricky to find these in an ordinary supermarket. Check with a specialty grocer or, even better visit a farm or grow your own. Zucchini are easy to grow!
