The Rich, Chocolate Hostess Cupcake Cake You Enjoyed As A Kid

As a kid, I remember taking giant bites out of that chocolate on chocolate cupcakes with the white frosting swirl the ones with the light, whipped frosting in the middle and wondering, How the heck did they get that in there?

In all honestly, I wondered it right up until a few weeks ago I decided to make a cake based on that childhood treat after my daughter saw them at the gas station while I was buying water. She begged for me to buy them, but when I read the ingredients I decided that it would be a much better choice for me to make them at home with ingredients I could actually pronounce.

My oldest has a way of challenging me. Why couldn’t she have picked up a piece of pound cake or one of those brownies with all the nuts? But never wanting to step away from a challenge I went on a recipe hunt!

When I saw the technique used to fill this moist chocolate cake with whipped frosting I said out loud, Oh, so that’s how to do it! It wasn’t as scary as I thought and the end result had everyone begging—after a glass of milk— for another slice!

Not quite understanding how to remove the cake for making the moat for the filling. Do you cut the section from the SIDE of the cake? Won’t the cake pieces be sticking out after inserting the filling? Not visualizing how the outer edge is smooth after placing pieces of cake back.
